Peetermans and Butterworth crowned British Bouldering Champions 2024
- Wednesday 28th August 2024
Last weekend saw Zoe Peetermans and Sam Butterworth take to top spots in the BBC at Last Sun Dance, Leeds.
Breaking with tradition, the British Bouldering Championship was held in Leeds at an indoor event last weekend rather than the usual specially constructed temporary outdoor wall at Devonshire Green in Sheffield.
Slotted into the calendar in the wake of the Olympics but before the European Championships in Villars, many of the big names from the international scene didn’t compete; that however, left the stage open for others to get involved and to push their personal game with a view to going deeper into a national event.
Led by ex-competition climber and national champion Dave Barrens, the setting team dished up a veritable soup of “typical” competition blocs to test the competitors to the max. Over 100 males and 35 women registered for the two-day event with the qualifications rounds on Saturday and the semi-final and finals on Sunday.
Thea Cameron and Luca Martins finished the qualification round in the top spots but both relinquished their hold to Louise Flockhart and Sam Butterworth in the semi-finals.
Zoe Peetermans – who was second in both the earlier rounds – came through with three tops to take the win in the finals whilst Thea Cameron came second and Louise Flockhart finished in third both with two tops each.
Sam Butterworth held his nerve and position from the semis to take the top place in the finals with 3 tops and 4 zones closely followed by Aiden Dunne who matched Butterworth’s 3 tops but was unable to secure the fourth zone; Alias Bignold narrowly got third ahead of Luca Martins – both finishing with a single top apiece.
