Being able to belay a climber on a top rope, either down at the climbing wall or outdoors on rock, is an essential skill. Part 2 of this video shows the basics of safe top rope belaying and how to lower off a climber safely when they've reached the top of the route.
Note
1. Technically this is known as 'bottom-roping' when the climber is belayed from the bottom of the route on a rope secured through an anchor at the top, but it is commonly also called top roping. The true definition of top roping is where the climber is belayed from above at the top of the route.
2. This video is only showing how to behave in a situation in which the rope is already through a double bolt belay, fixed appropriately and with a suitable lockable karabiner to lower through.
