Articles - Beginner's Guide: Top-rope Belaying (Part 1)

Andy McCue - Posted on 22 Jan 2010
Being able to belay a climber on a top rope, either down at the climbing wall or outdoors on rock, is an essential skill. Part 1 of this video shows the basics of safe top rope belaying and taking in safely using a 'bucket type' belay device (in this case a Wild Country VC Pro).
Note: Technically the activity in this video is known as 'bottom-roping' when the climber is belayed from the bottom of the route on a rope secured through an anchor at the top, but it is commonly also called top roping. The true definition of top roping is where the climber is belayed from above at the top of the route.
